Flowers

1978, oil on canvas, 82x65 cm /// Herberts Siliņš(1926–2001) is one of the representatives of Latvian colour painting of the 20th century. His painting is a constant presence, distinguished by pure, bright colours and a fresh perspective. His works radiate expressiveness, emotion, and dynamism. The artist ranks among the most outstanding Latvian authors of the 20th century, whose contemporary nature and approach to painting remain relevant even today. A classic still life composition with a jug of flowers and adjoined fruits. The artistic expression is achieved by colour and its intensity, which gives the painting a decorative character. Bright and light in a mood artwork. The artist has chosen to depict simple summer meadow flowers arranged in a clay jug, emphasizing their expressiveness with the pastose texture of the brushstroke and the use of saturated colours. A vivid accent is also brought by the fruits modelled in the Post-impression style with a thick layer of paint that gives an additional volume to the objects. The background formed in a picturesque manner outlining the parts of the sky and earth. In the brushwork technique dominates a smooth and smudged stroke, which creates the colour transitions. In the celestial part used an even gradation from pink and purple to light blue, in the earth turquoise and several shades of green. The surface on which the depicted objects are placed is laid out with elongated linear strokes in the same colour scheme as the representation of the sky. /// The artist's signature on the lower left side of the painting.
