Autumn in a Small Town with Reflections

1988, oil on canvas, 100x100 cm (with frame 102,5x102,5x3,5 cm) /// Valdis Bušs (1924–2014) is one of the most prominent and expressive Latvian landscape painters, celebrated for his rich use of colour and distinctive, dynamic approach. The painting created in the end of the 1980s and dedicated to the theme of a small town. Is used a diverse range of colours keeping the orange as unifying shade, which symbolically indicates the atmosphere of the autumn season, which also appears in the title of the painting. The composition is designed in a separate brushstroke technique, which acquires a mottled and slightly smoothed texture. The characteristic colour contrast is achieved with an equable representation of the sky in contrast to the multicoloured and rhythmically formed structure of the earth. The monumental and expressive depiction of trees stands out. /// The artist's signature and date are on the lower left side of the painting. The artwork is reproduced in the e-book “On the Bright Side of Life. Valdis Bušs” and in both the e-book and physical book “Krāsa un gaisma. Valdis Bušs,” authors: Līga Baņķiere and Ieva Trillo, published by LLC Art Platz, Riga, 2024.
