Bikernieki Forest

1969, oil on canvas, 84x105 cm /// The style of painter Edgars Vinters (1919–2014) is characterised by a blend of realism and impressionism. In his landscape with a forest and road motif, the artist has chosen to depict the Bikernieki Forest, a place located in one of the suburbs of Riga. With a style characteristic of Impressionist painting, Vinters has captured the calm and meditative atmosphere of the forest and nature. The structure of the composition is symmetrical: in the centre is the road that divides both sides of the forest into equal parts. One of the main characteristics of his artistic expression is the depiction of light and falling shadows. The painting is created using a mixed brushstroke technique, with smooth and pastose strokes that create a variety of volume and surface texture in the depicted objects. The colour palette includes several shades of green and brown. /// The artist’s signature and date are on lower left side of the painting.
