Autumn Landscape with a Tree

Oil on cardboard, 50 x 70 cm, 1981 /// The painter Edgars Vinters (1919-2014) was one of the representatives of classical Latvian landscape painting. He masterfully captured the themes of local nature and the seasons in his paintings. A moody landscape with a depiction of an autumn motif. The image is made in a unifying brownish-purple overall tone, creating an atmosphere according to the depicted season, which is achieved by the grey sky. Trees are shown as the central objects in the middle of the painting, while the foreground is created as an open area covered by fallen tree leaves. Special attention is placed on the rhythmically arranged brushstroke pattern. The paint is applied in a thicker layer in places, which creates a bolder surface texture and gives a more expressive volume of shapes. The artist’s signature and dating are on the lower left.
