After the Storm

2015–2018, watercolour on paper, 57x78 cm (with frame 78,5x99,5x0,5 cm) /// In the oeuvre of the Latvian aquarellist Zigmunds Šņore (1942), subtle nuances of light and colour are revealed, creating an artistic atmosphere that is at once fragile and inwardly strong. The artist works predominantly within the landscape genre, producing aquarelles distinguished by refined colours and nuanced tonal transitions that lend the works a sense of lightness and spatial depth. A significant place in his practice is occupied by motifs of nature and water – the sea, rivers, and yachts – in which a feeling of expansiveness and an atmospheric characterisation of place come to the fore. The work “After the Storm” is a mood landscape in which Šņore captures the sea in a transitional state between tension and calm. Softly flowing greys, blues, and muted ochre tones evoke associations with the gradual subsiding of waves after a storm. At the same time, delicate tonal shifts convey movement, light, and the saturation of air. The work emphasises the fleeting nature of the moment and a visual restraint, allowing the sea’s enduring energy to reveal itself through transparent layering and precise brushwork. /// The artist’s signature is located on the lower right side.
