Spring Trees

2001, oil on cardboard, 65x87 cm (with frame 69x91x2 cm) /// Edgars Vinters (1919–2014) – one of the representatives of plein-air painting in Latvia in the second half of the twentieth century, whose works convey the vibration of light and the play of sunlight characteristic of an impressionistic manner. In the painting “Spring Trees”, the artist depicts an early spring landscape with still-bare birches and ground covered with melting snow. The composition is dominated by vertical tree trunks, whose light tones contrast with the warm brownish and greenish areas of the land. A free brushstroke and the layering of colour create a lively atmosphere, emphasising the awakening of nature and the presence of light at the beginning of spring. /// The artist’s signature and date are located on the lower right side.
