Edge of the River

Description

1981, oil on cardboard, 64x86 cm (with frame 69x91x2 cm) /// Edgars Vinters (1919–2014) was one of the leading representatives of Latvian landscape painting in the second half of the 20th century, whose work placed particular emphasis on the depiction of light and on the tradition of plein air painting. In this painting, the artist depicts early spring on a riverbank, where melting ice and the thawing shore signal the changing of the seasons. The course of the river leads the viewer’s gaze into the depth of the landscape, while the trunks of the leafless trees lend the composition rhythm and a sense of spatial depth. Earthy ochres and greyish-brown tones contrast with the cool hues of the ice and water, creating a subtle interplay of light and shadow. The free, impasto brushwork and restrained colour palette emphasise the transitional character of the spring landscape and its tranquil, contemplative atmosphere. /// The artist’s signature and date are located in the lower right corner of the painting.
