Description
1970, oil on cardboard, 50x79,5 (with frame 70x100x4 cm) /// Aleksandrs Zviedris (1905–1993) was one of the best-known Latvian marine painters, with maritime subjects forming a central part of his oeuvre. His paintings are distinguished by a sensitivity to the interplay of colour and atmosphere, alongside an expressive treatment of nature’s elemental forces. The present work depicts turbulent waves meeting a rocky shoreline in the foreground. The white foam of the waves and greenish hues of the water stand in contrast to the dark, cloud-laden sky, while ochre, russet and brown tones of the rocks enrich the composition’s palette. The vigorous, at times heavily textured brushwork accentuates the movement of the waves, lending the painting a sense of painterly expression. /// The artist’s signature and date are located in the lower right corner of the painting.
