Cholera in Riga
Description
1989–1990, tempera, watercolour on paper, 27x19,5 cm /// Kārlis Dobrājs (1943) is one of the classics of Latvian painting. The artist created a series of illustrations for the Latvian folk-tale anthology “Vēja vanadziņš” (“Windy Accipiter”, 1993). The hand-drawn, coloured illustrations are original one-off works, in which the narratives of Latvian folk tales are interpreted visually. The specific illustration depicts a legend about a cholera outbreak in Riga around 1830, in which the disease is portrayed as giant that engulfs the city.
